Just to say if anyone else suddenly finds that they cannot send emails (but can receive) with BT broadband and Vista, the solution is to change the outgoing SMTP setting from the default to 587.

It took me days to try and track down the problem but I found the solution on a Vista solutions web site (link is http://www.winforumz.com/vista/. It worked for me !

I was saying only yesterday that we ought to have a computer forum on the village website! This could even develop into an informal "computer group" in SV - we all have different abilities as far as computer expertise and might well be able to help someone who is stuck with a problem (I already have a couple of regulars!)
